There's nowhere quite like the Isle of Man. Its compact size - just 33 miles long and 15 miles wide. Crammed within its jagged shores is a great variety of features as well as many natural attributes, there is more - much more - to entice visitors of all tastes to the Isle of Man. Attractions range from eight fine golf courses to the worlds largest working waterwheel and an extraordinary Victorian transport system.

The Island is a unique self-governing kingdom - a Crown dependency which belongs to neither the UK nor the European Union. It has its own parliament (called Tynwald), laws, traditions, culture, cuisine and postage stamps. But as a holiday island it is best known for its very agreeable and relaxed pace of life, along with a wealth of attractions and places to stay. And while other differences include the Manx language and currency (though English is the spoken tongue and English and UK currencies are accepted everywhere), there are also reassuring familiarities - such as driving on the left and road signs in English.

The thriving east coast town and port of Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man. The hub of much Island activity, it offers a great variety of accommodation, holiday attractions and other visitor facilities such as first-class shopping, banks, building societies, and car hire. Douglas is 16 miles from the northern coastal town of Ramsey, 12 miles from Castletown on the south coast, and 11 miles from the west coast port of Peel. There are also many lovely villages nestling in beautiful countryside and offering idyllic rural accommodation.

There are familiar High Street names, local speciality stores, the Woollen Mills at Laxey, heritage shops, excellent new facilities in Douglas and many other traditional shops across the Island. The superb Tynwald Mill Craft Centre at St John's is one of several outlets selling Manx rural craft products made right here on the Isle of Man.

The many attractions include the Wet Zone, Manxland, Superbowl, Curraghs Wildlife Park, Onchan Pleasure Park, and the interactive hi-tech Manx Museum and House of Manannan. Not forgetting beaches, swimming pools, Mooragh Park at Ramsey and Silverdale's boating pool, carousel, picnic area and wildlife and nature trails. The Isle of Man is blessed with 9 good quality golf courses within 10-50 minute drive from each other. From the finest pure links style to beautiful park land and heath land courses. The Isle of Man has all styles to suit all tastes and challenges. Golf has been formally played on the Island since 1891 when the first course was laid out and opened at Ramsey. This was followed within months by the first course in Douglas, the capital town. There are now 8 affiliated Clubs within the local golf union and each of them are located in areas of stunning views and scenery.

The Isle of Man is known as the Road Racing Capital of the World. As well as the TT (Tourist Trophy) Races, action and adrenalin are guaranteed as top cyclists, karters, rally drivers and classic cars compete throughout the summer months. And there are further attractions at Murray's Motorcycle Museum (open during summer) and the Manx Museum. The famous TT Festival has run almost every year since the beginning of the 20th Century. It brings in vistors from all around the world to see the fast paced motor racing. The Manx Grand Prix races follow the Mountain Course, as with the TT races and take place every year at the end of the Summer months.
